GLOBAL WARMING AND ITS EFFECTS

GLOBAL WARMING AND ITS EFFECTS

In this article you will study about concept and Factors responsible for global warming, Effects of global warming

                         GLOBAL WARMING AND ITS EFFECTS

The issue of human caused or anthropogenic climate change widely being termed as 'Global Warming" is becoming a central focus of the green movement. It has been observed that there is a rise in carbon-di-oxide concentration from 275 ppm 100 yrs ago to 350 ppm at present. It is also estimated to rise further to 450 ppm by the end of 2040. The increase in the average temperature of the earth's near surface, air and oceans in recent decades is referred to as global warming. In common usage the term refers to recent change of climatic condition throughout the globe. In fact, we have already started feeling the effect of global warming.

Undoubtedly, temperature is an essential element for the subsistence of all the organisms including human being in the earth. However, the over concentration of temperature due to various Greenhouse gases like CO2, methane nitrous oxide, CFC water vapour etc. which have the capacity of absorbing heat in atmosphere, is mainly responsible for global warming. As per a report carbon-di-oxide, that rises from industrial emissions, combustion of fossil fuel, deforestation etc. contributes 49% in the average rising temperature. Methane that is released during coal mining. oil exploration etc. contributes 18% of the global warming. Besides, the CFC and nitrous oxide etc. contributes 14% and 6% increase of average temperature respectively. In addition to this ozone depletion mainly caused by CFC and other harmful chemicals, reckless cutting down of trees and extinction of forests, use of fossil fuel in the motor vehicle, ships, aeroplanes and emetions of carbon-di-oxide, oxides of sulphur etc. have considerably increased the average temperature of the earth.

Considering the above said factors the Inter-governmental Penal on Climate Change (IPCC) has predicted an average global rise in temperature of 1.4 degrees to 5.8 degrees Celsius between 1990 to 2100. The main effect of global warming is melting of ice-peaks all over the world particularly in Antarctica. This would result in the rise of sea-level threatening coastal floading. Thus, there is a threat to the coastal cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Dhaka, etc. of being immersed under water. Moreover, global warming causing climate change, rainfall patern resulting into scarcity of availability of fresh water.

In order to combat the problem the Inter-national community have met together on various occasion and recently the United Nations climate change conference 2007 was held at Bali, Indonesia, where a resolution was taken for reduction of emissions of at least 50% by 2050 demanding an urgent global response on this issue.
